A mysterious device designed to grant its owner eternal life returns after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. In an interview included with the Criterion edition of the film, Ron Perlman says that Angel was supposed to speak fluent Spanish. Ron Perlman tried it, but Guillermo del Toro found his reading completely useless. So the character was changed to an American expatriate who hates being in Mexico so much that he speaks the little Spanish he does intentionally badly. When Jesús is looking for Aurora after she takes Cronos, he stops as he walks through two doors. Behind him, reflected in the glass of the doors, are the crew and equipment. [discussing why Deiter wants Cronos] Jesus Gris: He thinks it’ll help him live longer. Angel de la Guardia: [laughs] That son of a bitch does nothing but shit and piss all day long, and he wants to live longer? Several explicit scenes of nudity were added in the US video release. While the main American theatrical release features a prologue and bits of dialogue in English, the secondary market release will be entirely in Spanish.. Appears in Masters of Horror (2002). Very underrated on this website, Cronos is a gripping tale that captivates the viewer throughout its runtime. Guillermo Del Toro’s first feature is a thoughtful, heartbreaking story that is above all fresh, intriguing and unique, while also managing to capture the spirit of horror in the same vein as The Shining, making it a film about family first and horror second. Cronos is definitely not associated with the slasher end of the horror market and is not nearly as dirty as goreography. Cronos manages to achieve an assault on the mind and soul, the essence of what a horror film needs to do if it wants to leave a lasting impression. That being said, I can, to some extent, understand where the average rating came from, it’s not a gore fest, it doesn’t provide a second of fear, nor are there unnecessary scenes where eyes are assessed with rusty pickaxes, but as any true horror fan knows, these are merely sideshows to better horror films like The Shining, The Mist and Cronos, if not quite at the top, then very close. There are three things that stand out in this film and make it undoubtedly worth watching. The most subtle is the commentary on US-Mexico relations that Guillermo Del Toro sprinkles throughout his film. It provides an interesting portrayal of how he and undoubtedly many Mexicans feel about their encounters with the US, that they are always trying to be dominated and have to stand on their own two feet in order to strive for success. The most obvious is the highly noticeable Christian commentary and the deliberate name play. Our hero, the antiquarian, is named Jesus for simple reincarnations, but the film is full of “my God”, “my Lord” and more comments of this type, undoubtedly a subplot on behalf of the directors to indicate the good that still emanates from our hero. Jesus’ granddaughter and wife are named Aurora and Mercedes respectively, and learning the meaning of their names, which are “dawn or first light” and “mercy”, provides the film’s finale with a sense of fulfillment. Finally, it is worth noting the acting of Federico Lupi and Tamara Shanath, who provide the necessary gravitas even in movement, if not through vocals, to convey the deep emotional bond between grandfather and granddaughter, which, when everything else is removed, is the main driving force of this story and the one that will make you want to come back for more.
